Since the COVID-19 pandemic begin, various research centres around the world are helping bring light to many questions that still remain unanswered on whether animals can be affected by this disease, and if so, how.
press release below by the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut (FLI) in Germany, a member of the global network of OIE Reference Centres, which has recently conducted research studies on SARS-CoV-2 (the causative agent of COVID-19) and animals.
The Institute started infection studies in pigs, chickens, fruit bats, and ferrets several weeks ago. First results show that fruit bats and ferrets are susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection, whereas pigs and chickens are not.
In the press release it stated that “According to the current state of knowledge, they are not affected by the virus and therefore do not pose a potential risk to human health.”
