On 1 July 2010, MAF and the New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA) were amalgamated. This will provide for a single organisation focused on the integrity and performance of New Zealand’s animal, plant, food and related sectors.

The AI viruses are divided in two groups based on their ability to cause disease (pathogenicity). Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus spreads rapidly, may cause serious disease and result in high mortality rates (up to 100% within 48 hours). The low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) can causes mild disease that may be undetected or no symptoms at all in some species of birds.

Several countries in Asia and south-eastern Europe have experienced outbreaks of avian influenza (bird flu), affecting mainly poultry (chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys).
The virus responsible for the outbreak was H5N1 – a type of influenza not normally associated with human disease.
