Avian influenza (AI) is a viral infection that can affect all species of birds. The New Zealand poultry industry is free from Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) and has never experienced an outbreak of any pathogenic AI.
- No table eggs or raw poultry meat are imported into New Zealand. Consumers can be confident that the raw poultry and table egg products purchased in New Zealand supermarkets are New Zealand produced and free from HPAI.
- The World Health Organisation has stated that there have been no confirmed cases of human-to- human transmission of HPAI.
- Both the New Zealand poultry industry and the New Zealand Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry have been working together for sometime to prepare comprehensive response plans should an outbreak of HPAI ever occur in New Zealand.
- The Ministry of Health has developed response plans in case of an outbreak of human pandemic influenza in people.
